The Stranger vs. Metamorphasis

The idea of conformity is presented in The Stranger and Metamorphosis alike; however, while Gregor Samsa in Metamorphosis conforms to societal norms subconsciously, Meursault in The Stranger conforms consciously.Gregor, after his transformation, fails to recognize that, as a large insect, he is unable to continue with his normal routine. Gregor consciously recognizes that he has been transformed into a bug, but his habitual thought process remains the same. For instance, Gregor initially still believes that he is capable of making the train as to go on with his normal workday. While Gregor is unable to fully understand the irregularity of his condition due to the fact that conformity dictates the workings of his subconscious mind. Meursault does not allows exemplify complete conformity; however, he shares his feelings of apathetic regret when he decides to say or make an action that may be viewed as irregular. For instance, Meursault reveals this conscious thought process when he tells the caretaker that he does not want to see his mother. Meursault is aware and partially influenced by conformity, while Gregor conforms but is completely ignorant about its influence.
